The Clinical Database

Pediatrics is the discipline of medical care for infants, children, and adolescents, from birth through the transition to adult care, and neonatology is its subspecialty for the newborn. In hospital practice the two share a common set of governing problems: resuscitation at birth and in childhood arrest, the febrile infant, bronchiolitis and community-acquired pneumonia, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, and sepsis in children, together with the preventive-care schedule and the chronic conditions, such as obesity and ADHD, that the same clinicians manage in the office. Age-specific physiology, weight-based dosing, and developmental context distinguish the discipline from adult medicine and are the reason its guidelines are written separately.

This section is new. It currently indexes the governing professional-society guidelines for pediatrics and neonatal care, with publisher, current edition, scope, and a link to the source for each. Multi-part syntheses in the site’s usual format, with DOI-linked citations and sequential part pages, are being added and will be linked from this page as they publish.

How this section is used

For protocol development, start from the source list above. Each row links to the publishing society’s page or the journal landing page, which carries the full recommendation text, the evidence tables, and any corrections or focused updates issued since publication. When the site’s pediatric and neonatal syntheses publish, each will list its complete source set in its footnotes and will be linked from this page.

For point-of-care questions, Lumen retrieves from this corpus and cites the page it answers from. Departments that want the same source set available to every clinician on a service can read about how a pediatric department runs these guidelines as one shared Lumen workspace.

  • Critical Care, which already carries the structured Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2026 pediatric series and the adult series it parallels
  • Emergency Medicine, where pediatric resuscitation, the febrile infant, and bronchiolitis presentations begin
  • Vascular Access, for peripheral, central, and umbilical access in infants and children and the device-specific care that follows
  • Infection Prevention, for device-associated infection in neonatal and pediatric units
  • Obstetrics & Maternal Care, for the delivery-room interface with neonatal resuscitation and newborn transition
  • Oncology, for febrile neutropenia and central line care in pediatric cancer patients
  • Pharmacy, for weight-based dosing and pediatric antimicrobial stewardship

Frequently asked questions

What does the pediatrics and neonatal section of The Clinical Database cover?
The section indexes the professional-society guidelines that govern general pediatric, pediatric emergency, pediatric critical care, and newborn practice: the American Academy of Pediatrics clinical practice guidelines, the AHA and AAP 2025 pediatric and neonatal resuscitation guidelines, the SCCM/ESICM 2026 pediatric sepsis guidelines, the IDSA/PIDS pediatric pneumonia guideline, and the Bright Futures preventive care schedule. Each row carries the publisher, current edition, scope, and a link to the source.
Which societies publish the guidelines indexed here?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (bronchiolitis, febrile infants, hyperbilirubinemia, obesity, ADHD, and Bright Futures), the American Heart Association with the AAP (pediatric basic and advanced life support and neonatal resuscitation), the Society of Critical Care Medicine with the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (Surviving Sepsis Campaign, children), and the Infectious Diseases Society of America with the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (community-acquired pneumonia in children).
Is the pediatric sepsis guideline already covered elsewhere on this site?
Yes. The Critical Care hub carries a structured single-source series on the Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2026 pediatric guidelines, indexed recommendation by recommendation. This hub lists the same guideline in its governing-guideline table and links to the source; the ICU series is where the recommendation-level content lives.
Does this page contain treatment recommendations?
No. This page and the guidelines index list the governing documents and their scope. Recommendation-level content, including weight-based doses, thresholds, and algorithms, belongs to the reviewed guideline syntheses, which will be linked here as they are published. Local protocols and medical direction govern actual care.
How does Lumen use this section?
Lumen retrieves from The Clinical Database corpus when answering point-of-care questions and cites the page it drew from. As pediatric and neonatal syntheses are added, they become part of that retrievable corpus alongside the guideline index on this page.
