How the guideline series are built

Each guideline series on this site is a synthesis, not a summary of a single document. The relevant professional-society guidelines for a topic are read together and their recommendations integrated into one reference, and every substantive statement carries a numbered, DOI-linked citation back to its source. Long syntheses are split into sequential part pages so each part loads quickly and is individually citable. Every page carries a date (first published) and a lastmod (last substantive revision) in its metadata; when a source society issues a new edition, the affected series is revised and its lastmod advances. Each series is reviewed by a clinician before it publishes. The perioperative and anesthesia series are forthcoming and will be listed on this page and on the department hub as they publish.

Frequently asked questions

What is in the perioperative and anesthesia guidelines index?
The professional-society guidelines that govern anesthesia and perioperative practice: ASA practice guidelines and standards on preoperative fasting, difficult airway management, basic anesthetic monitoring, central venous access, perioperative blood management, and moderate procedural sedation; the PONV consensus guidelines; ERAS Society guidelines for colorectal and cardiac surgery; the ACC/AHA perioperative cardiovascular management guideline; the Association of Anaesthetists safe vascular access guidelines; and the ASRA antithrombotic guidelines for regional anesthesia. Each entry names the publisher and current edition and links to the source.
How will the perioperative guideline series be built?
In the same format as the site’s other departments: the relevant society guidelines for a topic are read together and integrated into one reference, every substantive statement carries a numbered DOI-linked citation, long syntheses are split into sequential part pages, each page carries a published date and a lastmod date, and each series is reviewed by a clinician before it publishes. The perioperative and anesthesia series are forthcoming.
Which editions were replaced in 2025?
Three documents in this index were superseded in 2025: the PONV consensus guidelines moved from the fourth edition of 2020 to the fifth, the ERAS Society colorectal guidelines moved from the 2018 edition to 2025, and the ASRA antithrombotic guidelines moved from the fourth edition of 2018 to the fifth. The ASA Standards for Basic Anesthetic Monitoring were also amended in 2025.
